For many years California residents have had to live with a short list of handguns they can purchase. They have to be tested and approved by the California DOJ which requires the state receiving free samples and the manufacturer paying the state money for each specific gun. Once approved the manufacturer cannot make a single change to the gun. It's so strict that if they change the color of a grip or even a different type of screw the gun is no longer compliant. They also had microstamping requirements for firing pins with the idea that if they found a shell casing they could see the stamping of the firing pin. Obviously criminals would destroy the microstamping or change out the firing pin if they were going to commit crimes with their guns and this requirement was just abandoned in 2023. With this new change manufacturers are more likely to pay California their blood money and get the state's blessing to allow a new gun onto their list.
Thanksfully for our California customers, SIG is now releasing their P320 M18 in a California compliant model. The P320 FCU has been modified with a magazine disconnect to stop the gun from firing unless a magazine is inserted. This is generally a feature only found on CA compliant guns so if you have a normal P320 the gun will fire if a round is in the chamber and the magazine is dropped. The good news is that this doesn't interfere with the function other standard parts so you can use any other P320 slide or grip module to customize your gun to your liking. This will be the only P320 available so if you want a different configuration you can buy those parts to customize the gun to your liking. The gun also accepts normal P320 9mm 10rd fullsize magazines.
