Today Springfield Armory is officially unveiling the new 1911 DS Prodigy. If it looks strangely familiar then you aren't mistaken. The DS Prodigy is a double stack 1911 that is, for all intense and purposes, a clone of the Staccato (formerly STI International) 2011. That's not a bad thing because the 2011 is a solid gun and we have no reason to believe that the DS Prodigy will be any different after users put a lot of rounds through them.
The gun is so similar that if you didn't see the Springfield Armory log on the side most people probably couldn't tell the two apart. We aren't sure, but it's even possible that the Staccato grips will work on the DS Prodigy. All of this will likely upset a lot of diehard Staccato fans, but if you are in that category you shouldn't be too upset. Springfield Armory is actually helping you out. How? The magazines are compatible with the 2011 and are significantly less expensive so you can actually thank Springfield for making a clone.
Out of the gate the DS Prodigy will be available in either 9mm with a choice of 4.25" or a 5" barrel and with or without optic pre-installed. .45 ACP models will likely come soon. I suspect we will see other variations of this new gun to further compete with the Staccato 2011. We've looked over a new Prodigy DS and the fit and finish appears to be at least equal to the Staccato/STI so for many people it will really be a tough choice to spend an extra 35% more for the Staccato.
