This FN Auto 5 is in mixed condition. Most of the metal parts have a pretty patina and little to no rust. The forend has been repaired from what we presume was a crack near the back end, and the stock has a JC Higgens replacement buttpad. The barrel has a "Cutts" compensated choke system installed. The barrel is about 26" to the point where the compensator begins. Three chokes are included for this Cutts device (see photos).
The serial number of this shotgun is 4837 . Based on this, the position of the safety, and the lack of magazine cutoff switch lead us to believe it is a very early gun, probably what is referred to as a "1904A", although it could be as late as 1909 which is when the magazine cutoff switch was introduced.
The chamber length is unknown specifically. It DOES chamber a modern 2-3/4" plastic hull shell. There is a chance that it may be a 2-9/16" chamber. We recommend having a gunsmith evaluate which chamber length it is for certain before the shotgun is fired.
The side of the receiver reads "Fabrique-Nationale-Herstal-Liege. Belgium-Browning's-Patents." on the top and "Oct.9.1900-Dec.17.1901-Sept.30.1902-June.16.1903" on the bottom.
