Why .44 Special

The .44 Special is one of the great American cartridges and one of the most under-appreciated. It throws a big, heavy bullet at moderate velocity — which means real terminal effect without the muzzle blast, recoil, and flash of a magnum. In a short-barreled defensive revolver, that matters enormously: magnum loads out of a 3" barrel mostly make noise and fireball. The .44 Special does its work at the velocity it was designed for.

Scandium Frame, Stainless Cylinder

The frame is scandium alloy — what lets S&W build a five-shot .44 that weighs less than most steel .38s. The cylinder is stainless steel with a PVD coating, and the 3" barrel is stainless with a 1:20" twist. The gun carries S&W's upgraded Endurance Package.

Sighted for the Dark

The Night Guard name is about the sights. Up front is an XS Sights yellow ring with a tritium dot — the ring gathers light and pulls your eye in during the day, the tritium glows on its own at night, and neither needs a battery. The rear is fully adjustable.

No Lock

S&W states it on the spec sheet header: no internal lock. For a large part of the revolver market, that alone is the deciding feature.
