Springfield Echelon Alpha 4.0C – 9mm, 4" Barrel, 15+1 (ECA9409B)
The Echelon Alpha is Springfield's accessible entry into the Echelon platform, and it does not give up the two things that make an Echelon an Echelon: the serialized stainless steel Central Operating Group chassis and the Variable Interface System, which mounts over 30 optics directly to the slide with no adapter plates. A 4" hammer forged Melonite barrel, 15+1 capacity, ambidextrous slide stop and magazine release, and a 24-ounce carry weight. SKU ECA9409B, UPC 706397004460.
The Chassis Is the Gun
Springfield's Central Operating Group is a serialized stainless steel chassis, entirely self-contained, that lifts out of the grip module. In Springfield's words, it "can be easily removed and paired with different grip modules and slides, allowing you to quickly reconfigure the Alpha across the Echelon platform." Buy the pistol once; change what it is later. The COG also carries a unique second sear design to help prevent unintentional discharge should the firearm be dropped.
Over 30 Optics, No Plates
The Variable Interface System is the reason people pick an Echelon. Under the polymer cover plate is a patent-pending arrangement of self-locking pins that you configure to your optic's footprint — over 30 optics mount directly to the slide with no adapter plate at all. The front pins apply lateral pressure to the optic's interior mounting surface, which Springfield says "eliminat[es] variance and left/right movement." Fewer parts in the stack means a lower optic and nothing to shoot loose.
Springfield publishes the compatibility list — it includes Trijicon RMR, SRO and RMR HD; Leupold DeltaPoint Pro; Shield RMSc, SMSc, SMS2, RMSX; Holosun 507C-X2, 508T, 507K, EPS; EOTECH EFLX; Vortex Defender; SIG ROMEO2; Viridian; Swampfox; Riton; Bushnell; and more. A Trijicon RMR footprint pin set is included.
Sights and Trigger
Sights are a white-dot front with a Tactical Rack U-Dot rear — steel, nitride finished, with a rear profile designed so you can rack the slide one-handed off a hard surface. The trigger is Springfield's patent-pending Echelon trigger, fully housed within the chassis, with key components precision-machined from tool steel and polished for smooth take-up, a defined wall, a crisp break, and a short positive reset.
Grip and Controls
- Adaptive Grip Texture — smooth to the touch until you apply pressure, then it engages a more aggressive texture below the surface.
- Interchangeable backstraps — ships with the medium installed; small and large sold separately.
- Ambidextrous slide stop and magazine release — genuinely ambi, not just reversible.
- Oversize undercut trigger guard and textured indexing points.
- Small grip module, 1.2" grip width.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an adapter plate for my red dot?
Almost certainly not. The Variable Interface System direct-mounts over 30 optics using configurable pins. An RMR-footprint pin set is included; other pin sets are available separately. Aimpoint ACRO and Steiner MPS are the notable exceptions and need a plate.
Are the front sights tritium?
No — the Alpha has a white dot front. The standard Echelon 4.0C has tritium. Springfield sells a U-Dot tritium set separately if you want to upgrade.
How many magazines come with it?
One 15-round stainless magazine. All Echelon magazines are compatible with the Alpha, so you can add the 18-round mags.
What does "Alpha" mean?
It's Springfield's entry tier for the Echelon platform — same chassis and same VIS optic system, with a simpler sight, magazine, and backstrap package.
Can I reconfigure it later?
Yes. The serialized Central Operating Group chassis lifts out and drops into different Echelon grip modules and slide assemblies.
